WPATH Standards of Care

Understanding the WPATH Standards of Care will help you know what to expect of your health care professionals, and if they are not adhering to the best standards of wellness for trans clients.

World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) – WPATH is a professional organization devoted to the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorders. WPATH was formerly known as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, Inc. (HBIGDA)

WPATH Standards of Care – Standards of Care for Gender Dysphoria developed by WPATH stating its professional consensus about the psychiatric, psychological, medical, and surgical management of gender dysphoria. The Standards of Care were updated in 2011 and significant changes were introduced to give greater autonomy and decision making to trans patients about their own care.
